The package approach represents a clear advantage over the institutional framework agreement. “Because the package offers more possibilities for compromises and solutions,” continues Leu.
This will allow Switzerland’s vital interests, such as wage protection and immigration, to be better addressed. Because Switzerland needs exceptions in these “sensitive areas”, stressed the state secretary of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and EU chief negotiator.
“We had another open and solution-oriented conversation,” said Leu. The EU also described the talks as constructive.
According to Leu, there are still differences. There is therefore still a need for clarification, for example with regard to the free movement of persons.
The State Secretary once again emphasized how closely linked Switzerland and the EU are. The war in Ukraine has shown how important a regular relationship is. It is the basis for economic growth, from which both parties benefit.
It was already the sixth round of exploratory talks between Leu and Juraj Nociar, head of private office of EU Vice-President Maros Sefcovic. A date for the next meeting has not yet been set. (SDA)
