Interested members have until 12 noon on 21 November to register as Sommaruga’s successor. The first hearing for the party base and for all interested parties will take place in Lucerne seven hours later. SP Switzerland Vice President David Rot will moderate the event.
Additional hearings will be held in Lausanne, Zurich and Liestal in the coming days. In a preparatory group meeting on 18 and 19 November, the SP group will decide on the criteria for the candidatures. The group presidency and the presidency of SP Switzerland will propose to the group that a ticket with two women should be handed over to the United Federal Assembly and that the candidacies can come from all parts of the country.
Parallel to the hearings, the selection committee set up by the SP Switzerland chairmanship and the parliamentary group chairmanship will examine the candidates for their suitability by 25 November at the latest. On this day, the party council of the SP Switzerland will make a recommendation for the attention of the faction in an extraordinary meeting. The parliamentary group will nominate the ticket to the United Federal Assembly at an extraordinary meeting on November 26. Election day is December 7.
