Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis (61) delivers a speech at the opening of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el Sheikh. Federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga (62) travels to Egypt for negotiation purposes, although the federal councilor has only been in office for a month.
After his speech at the opening event on Monday, November 7, Cassis will participate in a discussion on food security and climate, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced Friday. He will also open the Pavilion of the Swiss-Egyptian Chamber of Commerce.
Sommaruga travels later
Sommaruga is expected to travel to the conference on November 16. Together with the environment ministers of the other countries, she will participate in the negotiations at ministerial level and in the decision-making at the conference.
The climate conference starts on Sunday, November 6 and lasts until November 18. The main topic of the conference is how to achieve the existing goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, the FDFA statement said.
This requires a “convenient work program” for climate protection, putting the countries and sectors with the highest emissions responsible. Switzerland will also support global investment in climate protection during COP27. (SDA)
