The winter energy crisis seems to be easing: Switzerland’s reservoirs are currently 87.1 percent full. According to the latest figures from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), the level is 5.9 percentage points higher than the average at the same time over the past 20 years.

The gas storage facilities in Germany, which are also important for the Swiss energy supply, are currently 99.2 percent full. The filling level is therefore above the long-term average. In the past ten years that was at the same time 90.2 percent.

The gas storage facilities in France are 100.0 percent full and those in Italy are 95.5 percent. This is evident from the daily updated data from the industry association Gas Infrastructure Europe.

Reservoirs cover 15 percent of demand

According to the Federal Statistical Office (BFS), Switzerland consumed 58,113 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity last year. When all reservoirs are completely full, this corresponds to a total electricity reserve of 8865 GWh, or about 15 percent of Switzerland’s annual electricity needs.

The figures for the Swiss reservoirs relate to 31 October, those for the gas storage abroad on 1 November. (SDA)
