After the surprising announcement of her resignation by Simonetta Sommaruga on Wednesday, there is good news for the Social Democrats. The Greens do not want to attack the vacant seat of SP councilor Sommaruga. “The Green Group will not be a candidate to succeed federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga,” confirmed faction leader Aline Trede (39).
The ecological forces in the Bundesrat urgently need to be strengthened, but not at the expense of an SP seat, the ecoparty said in a press release.
Greens enthusiastic about the FDP seat
“We would like to thank Simonetta Sommaruga for her wonderful and dedicated work in the Federal Council. We wish her partner and her a lot of strength in their difficult situation and hope for a speedy recovery’, Trede continues.
Greens chairman Balthasar Glättl (50)i also thanked federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga for her “long, courageous commitment as a federal councilor” on Twitter.
In the same statement, however, the Greens make it clear that they definitely want a seat in government next year, at the expense of Freisinn: “The most overrepresented party in the Bundesrat remains the FDP,” Trede continued.
The Greens would therefore aim for the first Green Federal Council seat in the 2023 general renewal elections – at the expense of the FDP. (you)
