Asylum system is not about to collapse

Migration expert Eduard Gnesa does not believe in the collapse of the Swiss asylum system: “The federal government, cantons, municipalities and individuals can do it.” Much has been learned from past crises, he said in an interview with “NZZ am Sonntag”. (archive image)

However, it is possible that tents will also have to be set up in Switzerland if more people come. “It is important that people are taken care of and cared for,” said the former director of the Federal Office for Migration. It is now important to be ready for the winter – if electricity and water were to go out in Ukraine, more people would flee. The neighboring countries are already home to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians.

Not everyone would leave Switzerland again. About a third of the refugees stayed in the Kosovo conflict. “In general, the longer the war lasts, the more likely people are to stay with us,” Gnesa says. In the future, one must be prepared for refugees to be used more often as weapons. “By the way, that is also part of Putin’s strategy. He wants to destabilize Europe with refugees.”

The migration issue will lose none of its topicality after the war in Ukraine. The next question is what happens to climate migrants. “These are not refugees within the meaning of the Geneva Convention. You will not be politically persecuted or threatened,” Gnesa said.
