No money, no time, no fun: voting battles increasingly take place without parties – unless it is their own fight. There would be no “no” committee to stop the mandatory vaccination initiative, which will go to the polls on June 9, if a single National Council had not created it on its own initiative.
Admittedly, you can’t make a big name with this vote. Admittedly, parties are not obliged to campaign. Admittedly, financial and human resources are not infinite in politics either.
Nevertheless, the inaction of the parties is a corruption of political mores. Direct democracy requires debate, especially in the run-up to elections. In the battle of arguments, informed opinions can be formed and contradictions can be exposed.
But without a counter it will be difficult. The parties represented in parliament have the responsibility to facilitate this debate. As commendable as the efforts of GLP national councilor Beat Flach are, the heart of our democracy should not depend on the goodwill of individual politicians.
