The outrage was great. At the end of December it was announced that the federal government would purchase a permanent ticket for the Swiss cable cars for the federal council members from this year onwards. Cost: 4,324 francs each. The government is skipping at the expense of taxpayers! “Have our federal councilors gone crazy?” asked SVP politician Mike Egger (31). But the government did not want to shake off their privileges.

But now the Federal Council is over the books again. He decided on Wednesday to renounce the purchase of annual subscriptions to the Swiss cable cars and the use of the box in the Bern city theater for his members at the end of 2024. However, the Federal Council does not want to do without the general season tickets of the SBB. These would continue to be made available by the SBB for the performance of its duties.

The free ski pass is not really worth it for government members anyway. With an average price for a day ticket of around 70 francs, the federal council members can hardly increase the 4,324 francs anyway. For the luxury subscription to be profitable at all, the magistrates would have to sit on the board for more than sixty days – it is difficult to imagine that this is still possible in that time.

However, according to information from Blick, Minister of Savings Karin Keller-Sutter (60) would have resisted in vain against waiving the free ski pass.

Also forego the theater box

It took a few weeks. But the Federal Council has now come to the conclusion that members of the Federal Council, the Chancellor and their partners will no longer be able to purchase season tickets for Swiss cable cars from 2025.

And that’s not all. The Federal Council also wants to abandon the use of the theater box in the Bern city theater from next year. The box can be used by the members of the Federal Council and the Chancellor. However, the Federal Chancellery says that it is hardly used.
