The Social and Health Affairs Committee of the Council of States rejected the motion “Increase AHV pensions for retirees in need” with 5 votes in favor and 3 abstentions. The parliamentary services announced this on Tuesday.
The implementation of the 13th AHV initiative is a priority for the Commission and will require significant financial resources, according to the relevant press release. Further measures that have fundamentally changed the pension system – or improved it for poorer pensioners – will only be discussed in the next AHV reform. This should be available by the end of 2026.
In December, the National Council said yes to an identical motion by Melanie Mettler (GLP/BE) – with 168 votes in favor and 0 abstentions. A large number of council members co-signed the motion.
In February, the party leaders of the FDP, SVP, Center and GLP promised to support Mettler and Rieder’s proposals if the initiative for a 13th AHV was rejected. (she/SDA)
