About 2,500 people marched through central Geneva on Saturday “for an end to genocide, apartheid and the occupation in Gaza.” The demonstration was organized by the organization “Boycott – Divestment – Sanctions against Israel” (BDS).
The demonstration led from the Quartier des Grottes behind the train station over the Mont Blanc bridge to Place Neuve. Participants waved Palestinian flags and sang chants such as “Free, free, free Palestine,” “Gaza, Gaza, Genève est avec toi” (“Gaza, Geneva is with you”) or “Nous sommes tous des enfants de Gaza.” “We are all children of Gaza”).
The demonstrators called for continued mobilization as long as the Israeli forces continue their “massacre” in Gaza. A BDS member said Israel is now using hunger as an additional weapon. The port currently being built for aid deliveries is nothing but window dressing.
BDS also condemned Switzerland’s “oppressive silence” in the face of the “genocide”. The Swiss authorities would be obliged to actively work to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law. The organization also called on Switzerland to immediately end military cooperation with Israel.
The demonstration took place without any significant incidents. However, there were major traffic disruptions and spraying works at the Musée Rath. According to a police estimate, about 2,500 people took part in the demonstration. (SDA)
