Another step towards NATO: the Federal Council wants to learn from American troops

Alarmed by Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the Federal Council increasingly wants to say goodbye to going it alone.

This will again be a thorn in the side of the SVP. Defense Minister Viola Amherd (61) and her colleagues from the Federal Council want to take another step towards NATO. This time, the Swiss government is seeking cooperation with the US National Guard. She wants to participate in the so-called State Partnership Program (SPP). The Federal Council makes no secret of the fact that this offers the Swiss army “the opportunity to further expand international cooperation”. In this way you can strengthen your own defense capacity.

The U.S. National Guard program serves to consolidate training cooperation with foreign military forces. Today, 100 countries around the world have completed a partnership program with the U.S. National Guard, including 25 in Europe.

The Federal Council does not want to offend NATO

Step by step, Switzerland is moving closer to the NATO defense alliance. Alarmed by the war in Ukraine, the Federal Council has set this target for 2022. Defense Minister Amherd said the war had shown how important international cooperation was.

Last summer, the Federal Council decided to join the European air defense system Sky Shield. At the same time, the Swiss military has opted for NATO-compatible fighter jets and air defense. At the same time, the Federal Council has so far refused to sign the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, even though Parliament had already given a clear mandate for this in 2018. But: the Federal Council does not want to offend NATO’s nuclear powers.

In all approaches, the Federal Council always emphasizes that everything always remains within the framework of neutrality. That also applies to the latest adventure with the American National Guard. With the planned cooperation from 2025 onwards, Switzerland will not enter into any obligations, dependencies or restrictions that would be incompatible with neutrality at the earliest. The government will hardly be able to appease the critics of the SVP or the Pro Switzerland association. (dba)
