In retrospect, former federal councilor Adolf Ogi (81, SVP) regretted the action: “The addressed letter was a mistake, I’m sorry!” None other than Ogi and his former colleagues Doris Leuthard (60, center) and Johann Schneider-Ammann (72, FDP) together addressed Swiss pensioners in the voting campaign to convince them to participate in the initiative for the 13th AHV Pension to to put a no in the ballot box.
But the shot failed. At the beginning of March, people clearly said yes to the 13th AHV pension – and Ogi and Co. got a shitstorm online or by mail. After all, the old federal council members continue to receive half of their annual salary even after their dismissal. This currently results in a pension of more than 230,000 francs.
But now things could get dire for Ogi and the other ex-magistrates. If SVP National Councilor Thomas Knutti (50, BE) and his colleagues have their way, the annual pension of former federal councilors should be reduced to 100,000 francs. Ogi’s fellow party members demand that the surplus be used for the 13th AHV pension.
The reason for the requested string concert is the controversial mass letter with the no advice. “Many people then indicated that the pensions of former magistrates were far too high and that this had to change,” said Knutti.
The SVP National Council believes that former federal councilors are not dependent on such high pensions. A reduction is therefore certainly justified. The former ministers would certainly have earned a higher pension for their efforts for Switzerland. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be as high as it is now.
And: With the acceptance of the 13th AHV pension, the financing of the AHV fund will face even greater challenges than before, Knutti continues. “It would therefore be appropriate if the old federal council members paid part of their high pension to the AHV fund.”
But Ogi and Co. can still hope: the demand will probably have a hard time in parliament. And in any case in the Federal Council.
