Nowadays, couples who marry have only two options: keep the name or adopt their partner’s. The proposal now on the table aims to create many other possibilities.
Let’s assume that Mr. Hoxha and Mrs. Ferrari exchange vows. If the Legal Committee of the National Council has its way, women will have the following name options in the future: Ferrari, Hoxha, Ferrari-Hoxha or Ferrari Hoxha. The same applies to humans. The Federal Council wants to go one step further and also leave the order of the surnames up to the couples. Hoxha-Ferrari and Hoxha Ferrari would therefore be possible.
Children should also be able to have a double name in the future – regardless of whether their parents have one or two surnames. It doesn’t matter whether they are married.
In addition, couples who are already married or have a registered partnership should be able to easily switch to a double name. This also applies to minor children.
The revision of the naming law goes back to an initiative by former SVP state councilor Luzi Stamm (71). There is virtually no doubt that reforms are needed; the question is how far we want to go. After the National Council, the Council of States will consider the proposal.
