One thing is clear: the 13th AHV pension will be paid from 2026, as the initiative requires. However, it is still unclear whether this will be paid out at the end of the year or whether it will be distributed proportionally over the year. Federal councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (60) said this on Monday during question time at the National Council.

The Federal Council will propose the modalities of the payment in its proposal for the implementation of the initiative adopted by the people and the cantons on March 3, the head of the Federal Ministry of the Interior said in response to a question from FDP- national councilor Olivier. Monthly payouts would be easier for administration

The Federal Council’s message about the initiative stated that the allowance would be paid once a year. According to the initiative text, retirees are entitled to “an annual supplement equal to one-twelfth of their annual pension”. The administration said the administrative effort would be lower with a pro-rated monthly payment.

There is already a 13th pension in the Principality of Liechtenstein. In the state, the bonus is officially called “Christmas Bonus” and is paid out in early December. In Austria there are even 14 old-age pensions: there you get double money in April and September.
