Due to “huge costs”: Center boss Pfister proposes a temporary tax increase

“We will never achieve our goal by just saving money,” says Gerhard Pfister.

According to Center Chairman Gerhard Pfister (61), Parliament could temporarily increase direct federal taxes to finance additional expenditure in the army. “A temporary VAT increase is also an option,” says Pfister.

Anyone who categorically blocks any discussion in this direction should also propose a solution. “We will never achieve our goal by saving alone,” Pfister said in an interview with “NZZ am Sonntag”.

The “huge costs” of the war in Ukraine and its consequences force us to think about the state’s revenues, Pfister said. “It is all the more irritating that it is not the Federal Council that determines the direction on this crucial issue, but that the parties and parliament have to find a way.”

Pfister is concerned about the 2025 budget

The centrist president said he did not know whether the electorate would approve a sales tax increase. “But only through a vote can we have an appropriate discussion about the price of our security and ultimately we will have a clear plebiscite.”

Pfister is concerned about the federal budget in the context of military funding, as he said. “If we do not take responsibility now and create clarity, it will blow up the 2025 budget.” The centrist president was convinced that there is already a very good chance that parliament will not be able to decide on a good budget for 2025 by the end of 2024.
