Cantonal elections UR: FDP runs in the second round with Georg Simmen

Petra Muheim Quick, who also ran for the FDP as a new candidate for the cantonal government, will no longer be a candidate on April 21. On Sunday, she received significantly fewer votes in ninth place than Simmen, who finished in eighth place.

Due to this initial situation, Muheim withdrew as a candidate at the beginning of the party congress, Ivo Schillig, chairman of the Uri FDP, said on Friday evening at the request of the Keystone SDA news agency. The party congress then unanimously nominated Simmen.

Simmen is 50 years old, a lawyer and a district administrator for many years. He lives in Realp. The FDP announced on Friday that it wanted to give the Urner Oberland and the Urserntal a voice in the government. The agreement between the regions and the parties is the party’s focus in the second round of voting.

The previous FDP government councilor Urs Janett was confirmed in office last Sunday with the best result of all candidates. However, the Liberals were unable to fill their second seat, that of Roger Nager, who resigned.

Georg Simmen and Petra Muheim Quick not only missed the absolute majority, but also one of the seven government places. Before them, the mayor of Silenen, Hermann Epp (CVP-die Mitte), was in sixth place and government councilor Dimitri Moretti (SP) in seventh place.

Epp and Moretti also missed the absolute majority, both will participate again. If Epp is elected, the CVP-die Mitte will now have four of the seven seats in the government council. Moretti is the only leftist in the cantonal government.

The government councilors Urs Janett (FDP), Christian Arnold (SVP), Urban Camenzind (CVP-die Mitte) and Daniel Furrer (CVP-die Mitte) were elected on Sunday. In addition, Céline Huber was allowed to defend the seat of outgoing government councilor Beat Jörg for the CVP Die Mitte.
