About 60 caravans: drivers blocked by police in Lausanne

About 30 caravans were stopped in the south of the city before the Maladière exit, another 30 in the north at Chalet-à-Gobet.

The spokesperson added that “some” of these caravans were “discovered” at Bardonnex GE customs around midday. The destination of the travelers is unknown. However, the spokesperson considered it “conceivable” that they wanted to go to the La Bourdonnette car park, where around 120 caravans of travelers from France were already parked without prior permission between February and September 2023.

Last year there were conflicts with travelers from abroad in various places in the canton of Vaud. The official stand in Rennaz quickly became overcrowded. In addition to Lausanne, there were also illegal caravan settlements in Yverdon, Penthalaz, Echallens, Aclens and Noville, which led to disputes with the authorities.

To prevent such a situation this year, the cantonal government of Vaud announced new measures some time ago. In particular, he appointed a delegate to act as “coordinator and mediator” between the authorities and the Travellers.

In addition, the cantonal administration had indicated that it was looking for land that was suitable for small groups of caravans in order to prevent large concentrations of caravans, which could burden the population and the environment.

The canton also stated that several locations had been identified for the 2024 season, but without providing further details. It was said that discussions would take place with the communities.
