The knife attack on an Orthodox Jew in Zurich shocked Switzerland.

The brutal attack on an Orthodox Jew in Zurich has certainly once again stirred parliament. It is therefore not surprising that the National Council wants to take tougher action against racism and anti-Semitism. The federal government should work with the cantons to develop a strategy and action plan against racism.

If the Council of States also says yes to the initiative, the Federal Council will be instructed to strengthen the existing specialist anti-racism agency with sufficient resources. The state government should also have a 2020 report on measures against anti-Semitism by the federal government, cantons and municipalities updated.

The National Council also calls on the Federal Council to investigate whether an additional representative for the fight against racism and anti-Semitism should be appointed.

The SVP would prefer that the borders be protected

A minority of the SPK-N, consisting of SVP members, asked the council to reject the motion. Spokesman Andreas Glarner (AG) said Switzerland would be better off instead of hiring a new representative. There is a need for consistent border control and deportation of criminals.

The SPK-N justified its motion, submitted in November 2023, by stating that since the Hamas attacks in Israel and the war in the Middle East, incidents of anti-Semitism in Switzerland have increased. Racism, in any form, should have no place in a social and democratic society.

The country’s cohesion is in danger

At the beginning of February, the Federal Council announced that it supported the motion of the National Council Committee. After the attack on an Orthodox Jew in Zurich last Saturday, Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider once again spoke out in favor of such an action plan.

She told the council on Thursday that hatred against Jewish people, neighbors and friends goes to “the core of our society, respect, openness, diversity” and thus endangers the cohesion of the country. “We do not tolerate racism and anti-Semitism.” The specialist anti-racism office will be expanded in staff.
