For many young people, a car ticket is no longer a must. The number of new drivers is declining. Last year, almost 76,000 people passed the car test, ten percent less than the year before.
This is evident from new statistics from the Federal Roads Office. The federal statisticians record not only how many people buy a ticket, but also how many people lose it for whatever reason.
A look at the numbers reveals five exciting insights:
1
Last year, around 80,000 drivers had to surrender their tickets for different time periods. The most common reason: driving too fast. Nearly a third of permits were revoked due to speeding. This is followed by a wide margin in which identity cards are withdrawn due to drunkenness (15 percent). About 6,000 people, about one in thirteen, are no longer allowed to drive due to illness or disability. That is 14 percent more than the year before. Illness or another physical disability is the most common reason why someone’s driver’s license is permanently revoked.
2
It is mainly seniors over the age of 75 who must surrender their card for health reasons. You must undergo a medical examination every two years. The number of traffic medical examinations has been increasing for several years and has increased by almost 20 percent within a year. The younger you are, the greater the chance that your ticket will be lost due to speeding.
3
In the canton of Valais, almost 1,000 people had to surrender their identity cards last year due to driving under the influence, which corresponds to 25 percent of all revoked identity cards. This means that the share of alcohol offenders is highest in the white wine canton. This is followed by Ticino and other cantons in western Switzerland (Vaud, Geneva, Jura and Fribourg). But also in Central Switzerland, especially in Uri, and in Appenzell Innerrhoden, a relatively large number of tickets were withdrawn in 2023 due to drunk driving. The residents of Basel and Schaffhausen are the most exemplary in this respect: here, identity card revocations due to drunkenness only account for six and nine percent respectively.
4
We have already mentioned the most common reasons why the ID card must be surrendered. But there are many more. In 2023, almost 200 people had to hand in their tickets because they were driving a stolen car (“theft before use” in official German). And 667 people had to hand in their ID because it declared that they did not have a “characteristic fitness to drive”. This is the case when the authorities are not sure whether someone obeys the traffic rules and pays sufficient attention to traffic.
5
And finally, a number that is not about the revocation of the identity card, but about the beautiful moment: a single elderly person over the age of 75 took the driving test in 2023 and passed it. We congratulate you belatedly!
