Parliament has decided: put an end to tax evasion by lottery winners

5, 14, 33, 35, 36, 41 and the lucky number 4. Anyone who guessed these numbers last week is now a multi-millionaire. However, depending on which municipality the lucky person lives in, he or she will have to pay different amounts of taxes.

However, it used to be possible to simply move to a community with lower taxes after winning the lottery. Because invoicing will only take place at the end of the year. That should change now.

The National Council also approves the change in law

The Federal Council and the Council of States have both already welcomed the change in law. Now the National Council also wants to prevent tax evasion by future lottery millionaires. He approved the accompanying proposal on Wednesday with 96 votes in favor, 88 against and two abstentions.

Many lottery millionaires move to a tax-friendly canton after winning the lottery. For example against Zug, as local financial director Heinz Tännler (63, SVP) recently confirmed to the “Tages-Anzeiger”.

This rule means that other communities are missing out on a lot of money. This made former SP state councilor Roberto Zanetti (69) so angry that he asked for a change in the law.

“It’s about honesty”

He called for lottery or gambling winnings of more than one million francs to be taxed in the future “at the tax residence at the time the winnings are due.” Last year he proposed “a marginal change to the tax harmonization law” in a motion.

“It’s just about fairness,” Zanetti argued this summer. The current rules could “in particularly spectacular and correspondingly rare cases lead to tens of millions in tax consequences for municipalities and cantons.”

The lucky one from last Saturday is not affected by Wednesday’s decision. After the decision, the law now needs to be amended. (she)
