“In retrospect you can say: the addressed letter was a mistake, I’m sorry!” says former federal councilor Adolf Ogi.

It was the tension in the voting battle for the 13th AHV pension. None other than the former federal councilors Adolf Ogi (81, SVP), Doris Leuthard (60) and Johann Schneider-Ammann (72, FDP) jointly addressed the Swiss pensioners to convince them to participate in the initiative for the 13th. no at the ballot box for AHV pensions. But the shot failed.

On Sunday people clearly said yes to the 13th AHV pension and Ogi and Co. got a shitstorm online or by mail. After all, the old federal council members continue to receive half of their annual salary even after their dismissal. This currently results in a pension of just under 230,000 francs.

Kandersteg says yes

Now Ogi regrets the action: “Afterwards you can say: the addressed letter was a mistake, I’m sorry!”, he tells the “Bund”. He noticed this from the numerous negative letters. “It is unacceptable that old federal councilors are vilified in such a way,” he told CH Media newspapers before the vote. They too are people with rights and obligations. He feels a “loss of respect”.

The results at the municipalities also show that the letter was a complete failure: in the municipality of Kandersteg BE, Ogi’s birthplace, 51.9 percent voted yes. Johann Schneider-Ammann’s Langenthal BE agreed with 53.4 percent. Only Doris Leuthard (60, center) could convince her housemates in Merenschwand AG – albeit with only 51.4 percent no. The canton of Aargau, on the other hand, said yes. After all: in Ogi’s community Fraubrunnen it was enough for a narrow no.

Ogi identifies the reason for the yes vote as the fact that people wanted something for themselves after billions had been spent on the Corona crisis, Ukraine or development aid. Now Ogi looks ahead and statesman: “The people and the estates have accepted the 13th AHV pension, and there is nothing wrong with this decision.” (brother)
