On Saturday evening, a brutal knife attack took place on an Orthodox Jew in Zurich-Wiedikon.

The knife attack on an Orthodox Jew in Zurich this weekend is also causing concern for the Zurich canton council. Politicians condemned the attack on Monday – and the SVP caused an uproar among left-wing canton council members.

Left-wing parliamentarians left the room on Monday morning during the statement by the SVP-EDU faction. Parliamentary group leader Tobias Weidmann called ‘dutiful convictions’ hypocritical. Today, anti-Semitism does not wear combat boots, but rather an Arafat scarf and a Che Guevara T-shirt, he said.

The perpetrator may have felt spurred on by the “anti-Israeli, anti-Jewish sentiment that prevailed in the left-wing city of Zurich,” Weidmann said. You should not be surprised if anti-Semitic slogans such as ‘From the river to the sea’ are shouted during a demonstration. This would cause “some people” to lose their inhibitions about “hunting for Jewish fellow citizens at night.”

Justice Director Fehr announced a full clarification

Green party leader Thomas Forrer strongly condemned the SVP’s response to Democracy works differently,” he wrote.

FDP cantonal councilor Sonja Rueff-Frenkel was surprised by the behavior of the left, even though she was “shocked” by the SVP-EDU statement. Rueff-Frenkel, who is Jewish himself, was against a left-right debate. “Anti-Semitism is a social problem,” she said. When her son, who goes to school wearing a yarmulke, is attacked, she doesn’t care whether the attacker thinks right or left.

Justice director Jacqueline Fehr (SP) also commented on the incident in the canton council. She announced a full investigation into the attack on peaceful coexistence. Hate and exclusion will not be tolerated; everyone should feel safe here. Everyone must commit themselves to the fight against racism and anti-Semitism. Until all the facts are available, partial information should be used with caution, she cautioned. (SDA)
