The majority voted for the 13th AHV pension: SVP thunders past the base

SVP president Marco Chiesa lost the AHV vote on Sunday. But the majority of his base was in favor of a 13th AHV.

The yes to the 13th AHV pension brings the SVP into argumentative circles. The voting result was a receipt for the “waste of money” by the center left abroad, for example in the field of development aid or the S protection status for Ukrainian women, the party complained on Sunday afternoon. Due to the ‘neglect of politics’, the initiative received broad support among the population.

The largest party’s rather helpless attempt to explain its defeat in the elections has a reason: its own base. As the post-vote survey by Tamedia and “20 Minutes” shows, even the majority of SVP supporters voted for the 13th AHV. 55 percent said they voted yes. However, in the middle camp this was only 49 percent, in the FDP 38 percent and in the GLP only 35 percent. The margin of error is plus/minus 6 percentage points.

Old dominates young

The research also impressively shows how the poorer people had the upper hand over the rich this Sunday. The higher the household income, the lower the approval for the 13th AHV. More than two-thirds of people living in a household with a monthly income of less than 4,000 francs agreed with the initiative. For households with an income above 16,000 francs, this was only 39 percent.

There is also a gap between young and old: 78 percent of those over 65 were in favor of a pension increase. However, among 18 to 34 year olds this was only 40 percent.

Struggle for financing
Where does Baume-Schneider get the money for the 13th AHV?

For one or two seniors, the letter sent by the opposing camp to all pensioners in the country a few weeks before the elections may tip the scales in favor of ‘yes’. Five former federal councilors, including Adolf Ogi (81) and Doris Leuthard (60), urgently called for a no vote to be placed at the ballot box. That was certainly not well received, according to the research. Nearly three-quarters of respondents indicated that they found the letter inappropriate. And so even Adolf Ogi’s home community Kandersteg BE, where the SVP has a voter share of more than 40 percent, approved the initiative with 52 percent. (lha)
