Election wins in the cantons: SVP expands its power

Just laugh: in his home canton of Schywz, the SVP is making gains in the elections.
Sermin FakiHead of policy

At a national level, the SVP was the big loser on Sunday as it was responsible for the no campaign for the 13th AHV pension. How fortunate that in addition to the votes in three cantons, there were also elections on Sunday! So the SVP still had something to celebrate.

In the canton of St. Gallen, the SVP won seven seats and was therefore not only able to repair the damage caused by the 2020 climate elections, when it lost five seats. But even surpassed their best result from 2016. The losers are the Greens and the FDP, who each have to give up three seats. Center, GLP, EVP are stable, the SP loses slightly.

SVP remains a power in Schwyz

A similar picture can be seen in the canton of Schwyz, the home canton of future party chairman Marcel Dettling (43). After a very ugly election campaign, the SVP was able to expand its dominance: it won five seats and now has 38 seats in the 100-member parliament. All other parties in Schwyz lost: Center, GLP and FDP each lost one mandate, SP and Greens a total of two mandates.

In the Schwyz government council, everything remains the same: the SP attack failed, so the government council still consists of three representatives from the SVP and two each from the FDP and the center.

In St. Gallen, all former government members also managed to re-elect themselves without any problems. However, no successor has yet been found for the retiring Fredy Fässler (65, SP) and Stefan Kölliker (53, SVP). The candidates of both parties must go to a second round of voting.

Uri out of line

This confirms the big picture from the first cantonal vote after the national elections last autumn: the SVP wins, the eco parties and the FDP lose. And in between it goes like this, sometimes like this.

With Uri a slightly different picture emerges: the big winner here is GLP. Although the Green Liberals do not reach a parliamentary group size, they are entering the cantonal parliament for the first time – and with three people. Apart from the SVP, which won one seat, all other established parties lost a total of four seats, the Center and the Red-Green Alliance two seats each.

And when it comes to executive power, Uri can also bring a breath of fresh air: 36-year-old centrist politician Céline Huber will join the government council.

Atici in pole position in Basel

There could soon be a breath of fresh air in Basel – namely the first government councilor with a migrant background. Former National Councilor Mustafa Atici (54) failed to succeed Neo-Federal Councilor Beat Jans (59) in the first voting round. But he is almost 4,000 votes ahead of his liberal competitor Luca Urgese (37) – the Green candidate Jérôme Thiriet has announced he will withdraw in favor of Atici. This means that Atici will likely be considered elected and the FDP will lose again.

Because while the SVP members could console themselves with the cantonal elections, FDP president Thierry Burkart (48) could not. He loses seats in all three parliaments – and even has to fear for a seat in the government council in Glarus: in the battle to succeed the outgoing liberal mayor Benjamin Mühlemann (44), the FDP candidate Roger Schneider (55) finished ahead the last place.
