Because of the accelerated procedure: Much fewer people from Maghreb countries in the asylum seeker center

The pilot project, which started in November 2023, ended at the end of February, according to a fact sheet published by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Friday. The 24-hour procedure of the BAZ Zurich applied to asylum seekers from Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.

According to a first interim assessment, the number of people from these countries in the BAZ Zurich halved, while in other BAZs it fell only slightly.

The duration of the procedure is significantly shortened

By performing the major procedural steps within 24 hours, the overall average duration of the procedure was significantly reduced. In addition, those affected are more willing to talk at the beginning of the procedure. This makes the conversation easier.

Asylum seekers from the Maghreb countries are rarely given the right to stay in Switzerland. In 2023, more than 6,000 people from these countries were registered in a BAZ. According to the announcement, this corresponds to more than a fifth of all registrations. Only 14 people from these countries were granted the right to stay during the same period.

According to the SEM, asylum seekers from the Maghreb countries are involved above average in security-related incidents in the BAZ. Some of them are spotted outside the centers with repeat crimes such as shoplifting or burglaries. (SDA)
