16 and 17 year olds will no longer be able to vote at national level in the near future. On Wednesday, after a year-long dispute, the National Council finally put an end to a proposal to introduce active voting rights from the age of 16.
By 106 votes against 84, the Grand Chamber decided to write off, or in other words to remove from the business register, a parliamentary initiative by Sibel Arslan (Greens/BS) on the voting age of 16 years.
In June 2023, the National Council voted in favor of drawing up a template – by 98 votes to 93. In the new composition after the national elections, a centre-right majority now prevails. The Council had previously voted in principle three times in favor of the voting age of 16, while the State Political Committee (SPK-N) always opposed this.
Arslan wanted to give 16 and 17 year olds the right to participate in national elections and votes. However, they must be denied passive suffrage, that is, the opportunity to be elected. (SDA)
