The man was released from police custody, the police of the state of Lower Saxony announced in Hannover on Wednesday morning. The search for the two criminals who are still on the run was in full swing.

“There is no doubt that it is not one of the two criminals still on the run,” the LKA said. After the arrest of former terrorist Daniela Klette, investigators arrested another person in Berlin a little later on Tuesday, LKA president Friedo de Vries explained. According to him, it was a man in the ‘wanted age group’. The Public Prosecution Service of Verden and the State Criminal Investigation Department have been looking for former RAF terrorists of the so-called third RAF generation for decades.

Recently, a man was taken off a train at Wuppertal Central Station and arrested because an eyewitness mistook him for dust. This suspicion was not confirmed. However, just a few hours after Klette’s arrest, investigators were able to report another successful search.

The suspects Ernst-Volker Staub, Daniela Marie Luise Klette and Burkhard Garweg are accused of, among other things, attempted murder and a series of serious robberies. The trio went into hiding in the 1990s. DNA evidence led investigators to conclude that the three could be responsible for cash-in-transit and supermarket robberies between 1999 and 2016.

Crime scenes included Osnabrück, Wolfsburg and Stuhr in Lower Saxony, as well as Hagen and Bochum-Wattenscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Public Prosecution Service assumes that the attacks were not politically motivated. The suspects are said to have committed the crimes to obtain money.

The left-wing extremist organization Red Army Faction (RAF) was for decades considered the epitome of terror and murder in the Federal Republic of Germany. In total, the RAF killed more than 30 people and injured more than 200.

Victims included Federal Attorney General Siegfried Buback, Dresdner Bank boss Jürgen Ponto and employers’ president Hanns Martin Schleyer. The RAF was disbanded in 1998. Dust, Burdock and Garweg are classified as part of the so-called third RAF generation. Representatives of this generation are said to have murdered the then head of Deutsche Bank, Alfred Herrhausen, in 1989 and the head of Treuhand, Detlev Karsten Rohwedder, in 1991. (SDA)
