Switzerland takes note of the report by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons, the Federal Council said in a statement on Monday.
The report calls on all parties to the conflict in Syria to refrain from using chemical weapons and to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law. Furthermore, those responsible for international crimes in Syria must be held accountable.
An investigative committee of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons concluded that there were reasonable grounds to believe that units of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization used mustard gas in attacks on rebels to capture the town of Marea in 2015.
In 2016, there was a controversy within the UN over responsibility for the use of chemical weapons in Marea, Aleppo province. The Syrian government under President Bashar al-Assad was also suspected. (SDA)
