The majority of current retirees can make a good living from the AHV and the pension fund; only about 20 percent of them are poor or at risk of poverty. However, research shows that the next generation will fall into a retirement gap, as the “Sonntagszeitung” writes.

It hits 58 to 68 year olds hard

“The people most affected today are people between the ages of 58 and 68 with middle to upper incomes; their pension losses will be the greatest,” said Karl Flubacher, author of a Wealth Center study published in 2023.

You are being punished twice: your retirement savings earned poor interest and conversion rates are lower today. For many people, even the 13th AHV pension would not be enough to compensate for the losses.

Even at average incomes, the pension loss amounts to thousands of francs per year, which those who are about to retire miss compared to those who have been retired for a long time, as several studies show. “Overall, pension fund pensions have fallen significantly in recent years and will continue to fall,” says Flubacher.

Younger people can hope

But people aged 50 and younger can hope that their pension will be higher again. Although exchange rates are unlikely to rise again, retirement savings should earn better interest rates, leaving more money in the account until retirement.

The reduced pension fund pensions also fuel the voting battle for the 13th AHV pension, which voters will decide on March 3. The initiators see the 13th AHV pension as an important compensation measure for the disappearance of pensions in the second pillar – but also for rising healthcare premiums and general inflation.
