It was “clear” that the World Cup jerseys would have to be manufactured entirely in Africa by 2026, the Valais resident said at a meeting in support of West African cotton-growing countries. “Football is an important player in the global economy.” But 70 percent of sales would be generated in Europe.

“We need to bring some of this money back to Africa,” WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said two days before the opening of the organization’s 13th Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi.

A study will be completed in the coming months to shape the efforts of the FIFA-WTO partnership for Coton 4 (Chad, Burkina Faso, Benin and Mali) and Côte d’Ivoire. The aim is to give these countries a share of the sportswear market, which is worth around $200 billion. (SDA)
