The Commission for Social Security and Health of the National Council (SGK-N) has followed a corresponding parliamentary initiative by Marc Jost (EPP/BE), as the parliamentary services announced on Friday. The decision was narrow with 13 votes to 12.
Now it is the turn of the sister committee of the Council of States. If the bill were to be adopted by parliament, the majority of cantons would have to adjust their practice, as currently only a few cantons pay child benefit of 250 francs. Basel-Stadt, Geneva, Freiburg, Jura, Vaud, Valais and Zug, as well as Lucerne and Neuchâtel for children over twelve years old, already pay child benefit of 250 francs or more, as Jost wrote in the justification for his initiative.
The Commission stressed in a communication that the increase in benefits would help families in precarious living conditions and middle-class families to offset the loss of purchasing power they currently face due to inflation and increases in premiums and rents. In this way, the Commission wants, among other things, to reduce the risk of children ending up in poverty. (SDA)
