The woman on the phone from the Observer was angry and indignant: ‘I just have to tell someone. Something like that doesn’t work!” What happened? The pensioner from Kehrsatz BE found an “urgent appeal to protect our AHV” in her mailbox, addressed to her husband. But he died three years ago.
Many retirees have felt the same as you in recent days. The ‘call’ went to deceased spouses, neighbors or acquaintances. Those affected angrily turned to the editors, including the “Tages-Anzeiger” and Blick, to express their dissatisfaction. Many people wondered: how does this happen?

They are professional address dealers who make personalized advertising letters possible. For a fee, you receive datasets from groups of people with certain characteristics such as place of residence, language or age. The economic umbrella organization Economiesuisse has obtained such a dataset from the company Künzler Bachmann Directmarketing. She declined to comment on the Observer’s questions.
The economic umbrella organization then sent the ‘call’ to several hundred thousand households. The letter was signed by the three former federal councilors Adolf Ogi (SVP), Doris Leuthard (CVP) and Johann N. Schneider-Amman (FDP). They recommend rejecting the initiative for a 13th AHV pension. In addition to Economiesuisse, the ‘No to the 13th AHV pension’ alliance also includes the FDP, Die Mitte, GLP and SVP.
The campaign was largely not well received in the comment columns and letters pages. Many people don’t just complain about the unwanted ‘personal’ broadcast. They are also bothered by the fact that old federal councilors who are fighting against a higher AHV are themselves entitled to a lifelong pension amounting to 50 percent of their previous income – about 230,000 francs.
“It is a shame that the campaign has caused dissatisfaction among some people, but it is not unusual,” says an Economiesuisse spokesperson. The former federal councilors were determined to oppose the initiative because it would “plunge our most important social service into deficits running into billions.” You are not simply at the mercy of such application letters. You can defend yourself (see below).
