He wants to become head of the Council of Europe: Berset is campaigning in Kiev

Former Federal Councilor Alain Berset (51) arrived in Kiev on Tuesday – shortly before the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is the first stop on his campaign tour through Europe. The man from Freiburg is applying for the position of Secretary General of the Council of Europe – a candidacy supported by the federal government.

In Kiev, Berset met with Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Speaker of the Parliament, and with the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA). The role of the Council of Europe in supporting Ukraine and its people in the face of Russia’s war of aggression was central to these discussions.

Berset also visited the Council of Europe office in Ukraine and met with Ukrainian officials to present his candidacy. He discussed the role of the Council of Europe in supporting Ukraine against Russian military aggression.

Second trip to Ukraine within three months

It is the second time in three months that Berset visits the country. At the end of November, Berset traveled to Kiev for one of his last foreign trips as federal president. At the time, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and pledged “long-term” support for the war-ravaged country.

As Secretary General, Berset wants to work to give the Council of Europe more political weight and visibility. He also wants to continue to put Ukraine at the center of the European agenda.

One of the priorities will also be to strengthen the Council of Europe in promoting the reconstruction of a free, rebuilt Ukraine and in discussions on compensation for the losses and damage caused by Russia’s war of aggression, Berset said in a series of meetings with Ukrainians . authorities in the capital Kiev.

There will be elections in June

The Council of Europe is one of the organizations that can ensure that world politics is based on the rule of law and that Russia is held accountable for violations of international law in Ukraine, Berset said, the statement said.

The Council of Europe is the main human rights organization on the continent with 46 member states, including Ukraine. The final decision on the election of the Secretary General will be taken by the Parliamentary Assembly in Strasbourg on 25 June 2024. (SDA)
