“Shame on you!”: Ogi gets into trouble because of a letter against the 13th AHV

Adolf Ogi has received a lot of mail in recent days.

This shot failed badly. In a letter that hundreds of thousands of seniors received in early February, several former federal council members warned against accepting the initiative for a 13th AHV pension. Adolf Ogi (81), Doris Leuthard (60) and Johann Schneider-Ammann (72) are calling on people to vote no on March 3 – because a 13th AHV pension would “make life more expensive for everyone – including retirees”.

The reactions followed quickly, and not just in the comment columns. A shitstorm broke out over old SVP magistrate Ogi, as CH Media newspapers report. He received a stack of letters and countless emails that were negative across the board, many of them ‘below the belt’. “Shame on you, you are an absolute A,” someone wrote to Ogi. “There is no more joy,” says one, referring to Ogi’s famous saying “joy reigns.” Many people are of the opinion that as a former federal councilor you should “keep your mouth shut”. Especially because the federal councilors do not have to complain about their generous pension of 234,000 francs per year.

“Disappearance of respect”

Ogi shows little understanding for the violent reactions. “It is unacceptable that old federal councilors are vilified in such a way,” he told CH Media. “They are also people with rights and obligations. He feels a “loss of respect”. He no longer understands direct democracy. Should he no longer campaign for the position of the Federal Council?

How Ogi deals with the reactions? He sends it to the SVP secretariat, which must now respond to it with a text drawn up by him. “I respect your opinion, but I do not share it,” it says, among other things.

More about the vote on March 3
From young to old, from rich to poor
How fair is our pension system?
The great AHV dispute
“In Switzerland, everyone can grow old with dignity”
More emigrants with AHV benefits
This is how much pension money flows abroad

The shitstorm shows how emotions run high at the 13th AHV. And how much sympathy she enjoys among the population, even among the SVP base. The opponents of the left-wing referendum are looking forward to Sunday’s vote with great nerves; they underestimated the popularity of the initiative. The letter from the old federal council members, which the No Alliance supports, should also ensure yes votes. (lha)
