Danger for Switzerland?: Great dissatisfaction in the intelligence service

The Federal Intelligence Service (NDB) is currently being restructured. The NDB said this with the aim of providing clarity on questions surrounding leadership, structures, working methods and personnel policy at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The staff survey previously showed great dissatisfaction. It is said that this research took place at a time when several aspects of this transformation were still in full swing, leading to employee uncertainty.

Is there a threat of betrayal?

During the survey, employees complained about bullying, a lack of leadership skills, inefficient work processes and a poor error culture, the ‘NZZ am Sonntag’ wrote. The newspaper cited internal NDB documents.

The poor working atmosphere could become a security risk for Switzerland, it was said. Dissatisfied employees therefore pose a risk of information leakage. There was a threat of treason or espionage.

Measures taken

The intelligence service is pleased that the NDB staff feels committed to the service’s mission. It is also assured that internal security measures have been taken, for example intended to prevent the leakage of secret information.

As early as October last year, a staff survey led to similar results as the internal documents. The NDB performed worse than the federal government average on almost all important points, the French-language Swiss radio RTS reported on Friday. The NDB management only gets 35 out of 100 points. The average in the rest of the federal administration is 61 points.
