Federal Council makes mistakes on border control initiative: the SVP was happy too early

The SVP is hateful: it has been calling on the Federal Council for years to return to systematic border controls, but it is simply not being listened to. She now wants to give the Federal Council a head start with a border protection initiative.

Acceptance instead of rejection

The government has recommended adopting an SVP proposal that calls for exactly this. The motion from the kitchen of SVP faction leader Thomas Aeschi (45) demands nothing less than the systematic control of people entering the Swiss border. And a denial of entry for anyone caught without a valid residence permit or other authorization.

Aeschi wants to put an end to irregular migration to Switzerland – which has reached record levels in the past two years with more than 50,000 apprehensions each. A yes from the Federal Council to the SVP initiative – that is a political sensation!

Aeschi takes it with humor

But nothing comes of it: the recommendation on the parliamentary homepage was incorrect. After a Blick investigation at the Ministry of Justice, it takes less than half an hour before the entry is corrected: rejection is now advisable.

“We were happy too early,” says SVP faction leader Aeschi, laughing. “We could have done without our border protection initiative.” By rejecting it, the Federal Council misses the opportunity to tackle the problem, he muses.

Collaboration instead of control

But the state government is still unwilling to hear about the SVP solution. The Ministry of Justice explains that the conditions for border controls are currently not met: “Neither public order nor internal security are currently seriously threatened.”

The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security is present in the border area as part of its customs controls and carries out risk-based controls. The Federal Council is trying to calm the spirit of the SVP. People who entered the country illegally and had not applied for asylum in Switzerland would be turned away.

Furthermore, “internal border controls have little or no impact on irregular secondary movements”. Rather, the solution lies in international cooperation.

SVP calls for an extraordinary hearing

“All EU action plans have yielded nothing so far,” Aeschi complains. And he makes it clear: “The Federal Council cannot avoid a discussion.” The SVP requests an extraordinary session on the migration issue for the upcoming spring session.

The controversial proposal is also on the table. “We are giving parliament the opportunity to address the issue,” Aeschi said. “If our proposals are rejected, nothing will stand in the way of our border protection initiative.”
