The latest coup: Five former federal councilors warned the population in a letter last week not to accept the initiative. Does the warning have the opposite effect?

This argument must be taken seriously. However, the former’s maneuver could also be a non-starter – and instead extremely dangerous for the civil no-committee.

The politicians may have their merits; they still enjoy great popularity among people. But retired magistrates with an annual Federal Council pension of 228,000 francs are the worst possible sender to prevent Swiss citizens from increasing their AHV pensions.

Schneider-Ammann also belongs to an industrial family that, according to the “Balance Sheet”, has a fortune of 475 million francs. That the Liberal once announced he would give up his pension and that the Ammann Group would provide jobs to 3,000 people is lost in the noise.

How the idea for this advertising campaign was able to overcome all the obstacles in the meeting rooms of the No camp will forever remain a mystery.

Blocher was not asked for the letter

But that’s not the whole problem: like all federal employees, former members of the Federal Council will also benefit from a one percent cost of living reduction this year. In total, this amounts to an additional 2,341 francs for Leuthard, Ogi and Co. – which almost corresponds to the AHV maximum amount of 2,450 francs.

In other words: just by adjusting the cost of living, the ex-magistrates are already entitled to a supplement worth a 13th AHV pension.

Is it any wonder that trade union circles are now joyfully spreading this fact – which they had specifically confirmed by the Federal Chancellery?

This is grist to the mill of the initiators. And another unnecessary target for the broad civil alliance that is campaigning against the 13th AHV pension. Incidentally, an extremely well-known former federal councilor is missing as the sender of the letter: SVP patron Christoph Blocher (83). The strategists did not ask him, as he announced on his web channel. “I’m clearly not one of the old federal council members,” he said. He finds the letter “useless”.
