The initiative “For a social climate policy – fairly financed by taxes (Initiative for a Future)” was submitted on Thursday in Bern with more than 140,000 signatures, as Juso Switzerland announced. It calls for inheritances and donations to be taxed at 50 percent, with a tax exemption of 50 million francs.
Revenues of approximately 6 billion francs per year are expected. They could be used to expand renewable energy sources, retrain programs for workers in climate-damaging industries, and massively expand public transportation.
The referendum is supported by the SP and the Greens. The committee includes the co-presidium of the SP and the Green National Council members Léonore Porchet (VD) and Katharina Prelicz-Huber (ZH). (SDA)
