The Young Liberals master the game of provocation. They draw attention to the major pension drama with a cheeky poster campaign. They have reserved a poster room right next to the Syna union headquarters in Olten SO. The following poster has been hanging there since Monday:

«Dear unions, why are you abandoning Valérie (4)? Only with the pension initiative will she receive an AHV pension!” The subject: a young girl, carefree in a field of flowers. In this way, the Young Liberals attack the unions head-on, on substantive and moral levels.

That is what the AHV initiatives are all about

There will be a pension showdown at the ballot box on March 3. The voters will then decide on two AHV initiatives: on the one hand, on the unions’ popular initiative for a 13th AHV pension. On the other hand, about the pension initiative of the Young Liberals.

The trade unions’ popular initiative “for a better life in old age” calls for the introduction of a 13th AHV pension. If the answer is yes, a thirteenth monthly salary for seniors will be added to the previous twelve monthly pensions.

The Young Liberals’ pension initiative wants to increase the retirement age. First, it must gradually increase from 65 to 66 years by 2033 and then be linked to life expectancy: for each additional month of life expectancy, it must increase by 0.8 months – to 67, 68 or more. Automatically.

Details about both initiatives can be found here.

Background: On March 3, voters will decide on two AHV initiatives: on the one hand, the trade unions’ popular initiative for a 13th AHV pension. On the other hand, about the pension initiative of the Young Liberals.

‘Unions want to destroy AHV’

Why the poster campaign in Olten, why the Syna union? “We want to show the unions once again that they want to ruin the AHV with their request for a 13th AHV pension,” says Matthias Müller, chairman of the Young Liberals.

The AHV will lose 130 billion francs in 2050. Red-Green wants to double this mountain of debt with the antisocial 13th AHV pension – to 250 billion, Müller continues. “At a certain point we only work to finance our pensions. The young people pay the price. That’s not fair.”

What bothers the Young Liberals is the selfishness displayed by the unions and all their opponents: more money for today’s pensioners, but no sensitivity to future generations.

‘Hope the unions give in’

“If the unions want our children not to become pension slaves, they should actually agree to our initiative. But they seem to resist the facts and that is why we must keep reminding them that no one wants to pay 11 to 12 percent VAT and accept huge wage deductions,” Müller explains.

Ultimately, it is the young liberals who take over the lobbying for our children and all the unborn. “I hope that the unions realize this in time – and admit it,” says Müller with a wink.

“Dear Valérie, thank you to the unions”

The chance of that is probably small, as shown by Syna’s answer. The union wrote it directly to Valérie, the girl on the poster. «Dear Valérie, thanks to the union, wages are rising. The more the wage bill increases, the more the share of premiums also increases. That is called direct solidarity.”

Today’s employees pay premiums for today’s retirees, Syna continues. The AHV fund is doing well, it is the only fund that is not owned by insurers. “If you want to live with dignity after your retirement, you must strengthen the AHV. Productivity and stress are constantly increasing. If you raise the retirement age, you will lose years of healthy living. Thank the unions for thinking about you and your health, even in retirement.”
