According to the initiators, the aim of the people’s initiative was to obtain rental apartments that are financially affordable for broad sections of the population. When homes are renovated, rents should no longer be “excessively increased”. Anyone who demolishes homes must also create a comparable number of affordable apartments.
The initiative aims to give municipalities the opportunity to set their own rules, for example regarding the permit requirement for demolition, conversion and renovation.
In addition, conversion of rental apartments to condominiums would require approval. When approving, municipalities must also be able to set a temporary limit on the rental price.
The MVZ and the cantonal parties SP, Groenen and AL are on the committee. Similar initiatives have already been taken in the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Geneva. (SDA)
