Iran has started building four nuclear power plants in the south of the country, according to state news agency Irna. The power stations in the city of Sirik are expected to generate 5,000 megawatts of electricity when completed.
In an interview with Irna published Thursday, nuclear chief Mohammed Eslami said his long-term goal is 20,000 megawatts, which the country wants to produce through nuclear power.
Iran’s nuclear program repeatedly leads to tensions between the Islamic Republic and Western states and their allies. As the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) noted late last year, Iran has increased production of highly enriched uranium.
Experts consider the peaceful use of uranium, which could almost be used as a weapon, unlikely. Tehran claims it will use its nuclear program only for civilian purposes.
The US, France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China signed a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015. It was intended to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. In 2018, the US under then-president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement. As a result, Iran gradually stopped fulfilling its obligations. Since then, negotiations to revive the agreement have remained fruitless. (SDA)
