Media conference at 4 p.m

What does the billion dollar gap mean for the military? Army Chief Thomas Süssli (57) must explain at a media conference. Blick will report live from the media conference, which starts at 4 p.m.

End of the live ticker

For Defense Minister Viola Amherd (61) and army chief Thomas Süssli (57), the motto today is: Come on! Namely at the Security Committee of the Council of States. They want to know what the military’s financial debacle is about. Radio SRF reported on Wednesday that the army has deviated from its own financial planning. The result: a billion-dollar hole.

During the hearing before the committee, the security politicians let the army chief cook for the time being: Süssli has to wait a painfully long fifteen minutes at the door of the meeting. When they left the room after noon, Amherd kept a low profile. “There’s no opening,” she says as she walks out. She further refers to a media conference with army chief Süssli, which was scheduled at short notice for 4 p.m.

Deviations from plan

The security politicians are not yet 100% convinced after the hearing. Although the questions have been answered, further clarification is still needed. “We will ask further questions,” says Franziska Roth (57, SP). The security politicians want to provide further information in the evening.

Eight years ago, the army had already planned in detail how the purchase of a new fighter jet and the strengthening of air defense would be financed. According to SRF, the army has deviated from this plan as of 2020. Namely by approving significantly more extensive weapons purchases. This has now led to significant financial bottlenecks.

Blick will broadcast the army leader’s media conference live in the stream and in the ticker from 4 p.m.
