Federal Councilor Beat Jans, left, speaks with an employee and asylum seeker children during a visit to the Federal Asylum Center Basel, January 19, 2024 in Basel.

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) assumes the same number of asylum applications this year as last year: around 30,000.

The SEM has informed the Special Asylum Staff about this prediction, it announced on Thursday. It estimates deviations of 3,000 requests down or up.

In addition to developments in Turkey, according to the SEM, the number of applications depends on migration from countries whose citizens are allowed to travel to the Schengen area without a visa. Another influencing factor is the border controls of neighboring countries.

Experience shows that the number of monthly asylum applications is likely to increase in the spring of 2024 and reach its highest level in the summer or early autumn, before declining again at the end of the year. According to information from SEM, Afghanistan and Turkey remain the most important countries of origin.

With protection status S for refugees from Ukraine, the SEM expects around 25,000 cases with a deviation of 5,000 up or down. This estimate is made under the assumption that the intensity of the war does not change significantly. In recent months, the number of people with S status who have left the country has been in balance with new applications.
