Federal Council rejects criticism: dispute over information from authorities before vote

Communication with the authorities before the vote always gives rise to criticism, for example with regard to the voting booklet or the communication of individual members of the Federal Council. The Federal Council only partially accepts this. (symbol image)

Communication with the authorities before the vote always gives rise to criticism, for example with regard to the information in the voting book or the communication of individual members of the Federal Council. An analysis by the Parliamentary Administrative Control (PVK) identified isolated deficits based on four specific votes – including the one on the corporate social responsibility initiative.

The GPK-N report bases its criticism mainly on the analysis of four individual voting proposals in which official information led to public criticism, the Federal Council wrote in its statement on Wednesday. He criticized the verdict for being based on a limited database.

Targeted criticism

Criticism of the Federal Council’s communications must be taken seriously, but it has long become an integral part of campaigns. It is sometimes used specifically to undermine the credibility of the arguments of Parliament and the Federal Council.

The Federal Council therefore regrets that the PVK has not analyzed whether and in which voting proposals such criticism could have been wrongly expressed, according to the Federal Council. The Federal Council also doubts whether the general assessment of the GPK-N, according to which communication with the authorities before the vote is only “conditionally useful”, is correct.

Nevertheless, the Federal Council partially accepted the GPK-N’s recommendations resulting from the report – including a recommendation on regulating communications in public statements and social media posts, as well as a recommendation on how departments should take editorial responsibility.
