From the BAG to the Swiss Red Cross: Nora Kronig becomes the new director

Nora Kronig Romero (43) becomes director of the Swiss Red Cross (SRK). The Red Cross Council is convinced that Nora Kronig Romero “with her experience in managing complex projects in a federal environment and her experience on the international stage” is best qualified to lead the SRK, the organization said.

According to a statement from the Federal Office for Public Health (BAG), Kronig Romero himself said: “I am happy and honored that I will soon be able to continue my work on behalf of public health and humanitarian Switzerland in the service of the Swiss. Red Cross.”

Diplomat training

Nora Kronig Romero grew up in Geneva as a child of German-Swiss parents. It was said that she knew Switzerland’s cultural diversity from personal experience. Kronig Romero studied economics in St. Gallen and trained as a diplomat. She subsequently held various positions with the federal government at home and abroad.

Kronig Romero has been working for the BAG since 2017. During this time, she maintained bilateral relations with neighboring countries and with the EU and represented Swiss interests in international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO). As co-head of the Covid-19 Vaccination Task Force, she was also responsible for national vaccine procurement and distribution during the Covid-19 crisis.

Kronig Romero will take over the management of the SRK office, according to the SRK announcement. This also includes coordination with the Red Cross organizations – namely the 24 cantonal associations of the Red Cross, four Red Cross rescue organizations and two Red Cross institutions. In addition, there is the coordination of the SRC’s relationships and activities with partners and authorities at national and international level.

Interesting: Thomas Zeltner (75) was elected the new SRK president last June. He was that from 1991 to 2009. He was called in as a crisis manager. After director Markus Mader (61) was fired last December, president Barbara Schmid-Federer (58) came under fire.
