In an interview with the ‘Tages-Anzeiger’, former Geneva councilor Lisa Mazzone (35) announced on Tuesday evening that she was running for president of the Green Party. «After deep thought, I realized that it appealed to me. I believe the office is the right place to bring my skills and beliefs,” she says.

Balthasar Glättli (51) announced his resignation last November – after the Green defeat in the federal elections. Despite her surprise deselection, Mazzone was considered the favorite for office.

Counterbalance for German-speaking Switzerland

Their story reflects the history of the Greens: “It has never been just a steep climb, there are ups and downs,” says Mazzone. You learn to get up again. As a French speaker, she wants to form a counterbalance to the chairmen of the other parties, who all come from German-speaking Switzerland – or in the case of the SVP, Marcel Dettling (42), will come soon.

And for Mazzone it is clear: a strong green party is needed right now. “The worst scenarios for climate and biodiversity are becoming reality,” she says. There is a revival of nuclear power plant technology, there is a big wolf hunt, the highway is expanded to six lanes and right-wing populists are gaining popularity.

The Greens were weakened in October’s parliamentary elections. This is already visible in Parliament. Your party must therefore play a central role at this time, Mazzone says combatively. “Giving up is not an option, even after being voted out.”

And Mazzone does not shy away from taking a swipe at her big sister party, which did not support the Greens in the elections for the Federal Council in December: ‘You sometimes forget that the SP is the second largest political force in Switzerland and therefore benefits from the status quo.” The Greens should not have too many illusions: “When it comes to power, the SP mainly looks for itself.”

The deadline for registering candidates ends on February 4. Numerous Greens, including parliamentary group leader Aline Trede (40), candidate for the Federal Council Gerhard Andrey (48) and Ticino national councilor Greta Gysin (40), have canceled. Meanwhile, for example, the Geneva National Councilor Nicolas Walder (57), who is open to a co-presidency, and the Vaud parliamentarian Raphaël Mahaim (40) have shown interest. (lha)
