Firearms would not have to be registered in a central database in Switzerland. The responsible committee of the National Council no longer wants to know about an initiative of the Green Party faction that it initially supported.
The parliamentary initiative was submitted by Marionna Schlatter (43), national councilor of the Green Party. By 16 votes to 9, the National Council’s Security Policy Committee decided to no longer support the initiative. Before her, the sister committee of the Council of States had taken the same decision.
The majority of the committee believes that tightening the Weapons Act 2019 with the networking of the cantonal registers is sufficient. The minority sees a central register as a contribution to security, given the increasing number of weapons purchases.
The SP is convinced that gun abuse can be combated more effectively in this way. She points out that in Switzerland a woman is murdered in her family almost every two weeks. The National Council must now correct the decision, the party writes in a response to X.
The National Council is expected to decide on the issue in its spring session. If he also says no, the initiative is off the table. (SDA)
