State councilor Pierre Maudet of Geneva has to go to court again.

State councilor Pierre Maudet (45) of Geneva is back in court. This time not because of a controversial trip to Abu Dhabi, but because of a car accident. The politician is contesting a fine. This was imposed on him because he allegedly hit a car and then left the scene of the accident. According to the Geneva police, Maudet will have to appear in police court at the end of January.

The incident took place at the end of March 2023. At half past ten at night, a driver braked on the Route des Acacias in Geneva. A collision occurred when the following car collided with the braking vehicle. But instead of staying at the scene of the accident, the vehicle behind it drove away. Angry, the driver of the damaged car decided to give chase and write down the license plate number. He then reported to the Geneva police.

Fine of 2100 francs

The police found the car and met Pierre Maudet, then a candidate for the cantonal government of Geneva. However, he said he did not know “where and when the contact took place,” as the “Tribune de Genève” reports. He did not notice any accident.

However, the police found minor damage to Maudet’s car and concluded that the perpetrator was in fact the former candidate of the Federal Council. Maudet was fined 2,100 francs for “inattention resulting in an accident and minor material damage” and “failure to fulfill his duty in the event of an accident”. Police also said there was “no serious doubt” that Maudet was guilty.

Already convicted for traveling to Abu Dhabi

However, Pierre Maudet disputed the sentence and assured that he had not hit any vehicle.

Maudet resigned from the State Council at the end of October 2020 after an affair over a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi in 2015. According to a ruling by the Federal Court at the end of October 2022, Maudet was guilty of accepting benefits during this trip and the visit to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. After being expelled from the government and his former FDP party, Maudet re-entered politics with his newly founded movement ‘Freedom and Social Justice’. His first surprise came in mid-March when his movement immediately won ten seats in the cantonal parliament. Then came the second coup: Maudet returned to government last year. (lazy)
