Irregular migration: the federal government will register more than 50,000 cases in 2023

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 iQNQmc”>

Last year, the Swiss border guard again arrested more than 50,000 people who had entered the country illegally.

Migrants with Afghan nationality were most represented in the statistics on illegal stay published on Wednesday. Nearly every third person arrested was from Afghanistan. People from Morocco and Turkey follow in second and third place, with one in eight illegal stays being their fault.

Suspected cases of smuggling activities decreased in 2023 compared to the previous year. 388 suspected smugglers were arrested, according to BAZG figures. As a rule, these people were handed over to the responsible cantonal police or, if the canton had agreed, they were reported independently by the BAZG to the responsible public prosecutor’s office.
