The governing council candidate of St. Gallen, Christof Hartmann, defends himself in court in Mels SG.

Do you want to be ruled by such a person? We are talking about 47-year-old SVP politician Christof Hartmann, who will participate in the elections for the government council in the canton of St. Gallen on March 3. But Hartmann must answer for this in court on suspicion of abuse of office.

The cantonal councilor of the SVP from Walenstadt SG will now occupy one of the two vacant government seats. In addition to him, the former canton doctor Danuta Zemp of St. Gallen is also running for the SVP. With the two candidates, the SVP not only wants to defend the seat of its retiring SVP government councilor Stefan Kölliker (53), but the party also wants to conquer the seat of SP government councilor Fredy Fässler (64), who is resigning for health reasons.

court ignored

A court conviction would obviously be more than just inconvenient for Hartmann. He is accused of ignoring numerous court rulings as vice president of Walenstadt in a neighborhood dispute over a garden wall. Yes, it is even said that he changed the orders in favor of one of the people involved. Blick reported on the case.

With the city council’s refusal to dismantle the wall, which the court found was legally inconsistent, Hartmann may have hindered his government ambitions. In concrete terms, according to the indictment, Hartmann was guilty of abuse of office in the course of a neighborhood dispute in 2015. Other former members of the authorities are also charged. In contrast to a ruling by the federal court, the then municipal council, of which Hartmann was a member, decided that the relocation of a controversial wall in the border area between two residential buildings could not be done.

Questioned by judge

Christof Hartmann appeared at the court in Mels SG on Tuesday morning. The single judge questioned Hartmann and a co-defendant about the processes involved in making decisions in the Walenstadt city council. (SDA/pt)
